Diversity Plan 2017-2018

IUPUI Campus Goal -- Institutional Viability and Vitality 

Campus objectives:

  • Building institutional capacity for diversity through the recruitment and retention of diverse faculty and staff, as well as university advisory boards.
  • Develop communications that effectively represent IUPUI’s campus commitment to diversity.

 

University Library actions:

1)    Anonymize application materials in the first phase of librarian and staff searches (before phone interview stage).

Timeline:  By September 15, 2017.--Complete    

Responsible party:  Library Administration with input from Diversity Council and University Library Supervisors Group.

2)    Review search and screen processes and procedures and develop written guidelines for committees to ensure fairness and equality for all candidates. Share widely via University Library Intranet.

Timeline:  By September 15, 2017.--Complete

3)    Identify and promote self-guided learning options about diversity concepts for all staff.

Timeline:  One-per semester.

Responsible party:  Library Administration with input from Diversity Council.

4)    Communicate to staff about on-campus diversity programming and events, such as intergroup dialogues and the campus’ annual Martin Luther King, Harvey Milk and Cesar Chavez dinners. Find ways to facilitate staff engagement, such as purchasing tickets and funding registrations.

Timeline:  Ongoing.         

Responsible party:  Library Administration with input from Diversity Council.

5)    Identify, schedule new cultural competency trainings, including Adaptive Services town hall, “Trans 101” training with IUPUI LGBTQ+ Center, as well as session on diversity issues in librarianship and Q & A with Muslim student organizations.

Timeline:  One-per semester, at least 3 in the course of the academic year.       

Responsible party:  Library Administration with input from Diversity Council and other library staff.

6)    Record all staff cultural competency trainings and make them openly available via the library’s shared Box account.

Timeline:  Ongoing.         

Responsible party:  Library Administration with assistance from Diversity Council.

7)    Hold “open” meetings of the University Library Diversity Council in order to facilitate engagement with programs and planning for all library staff.

Timeline:  Ongoing.

IUPUI Campus Goal -- Education and Scholarship

Campus objectives:

  • Ensure that every university constituent has access to information, materials and experiences necessary to engage in an increasingly diverse world.

 

University Library actions:

1)    Work with Adaptive Educational Services to review and enhance UL services and resources for library patrons with disabilities.

Timeline:  By December 15, 2017.           

Responsible party:  Library Administration with assistance from Diversity Council.

2)    Ensure that library digital learning objects adhere to accessibility best practices.

Timeline:  Ongoing.         

Responsible party:  University Library Educational Services Group.

3)    Research approaches to assess diversity values in library collection development. Including:

  1. Tracking titles purchased across one academic year.
  2. Reviewing and enhancing strategies for purchasing or “hiring” new Pop Shop titles related to diversity issues.
  3. Identifying/adding diversity titles to the library’s demand-driven-acquisition pool.

Timeline:  By March 2018.          

Responsible party:  Library Administration with guidance from the Collections Working Group and UL Diversity Council, additional input from campus affinity councils.

4)    Document UL philosophy regarding supporting diversity through collections development practices.

Timeline:  By May 1, 2018.          

Responsible party:  Library Administration with input from Diversity Council and University Library Faculty Organization.

5)    Continue to develop external funding support and solicit new records for digital and archival library collections that reflect the cultures of underrepresented groups, including the IUPUI Muslim American Philanthropy Collection.

Timeline:  Ongoing.         

Responsible party:  Ruth Lilly Special Collections and Archives and the Center for Digital Scholarship with University Library External Relations Team.

 

IUPUI Campus Goal -- Climate and Intergroup Relations

Campus objectives:

  • Develop programs to improve campus climate for students, staff and faculty at all levels.

 

University Library actions:

1)    Continue UL cultural competency trainings and Org Week workshops.

Timeline:  One-per semester, at least 3 in the course of the academic year.       

Responsible party:  Library Administration with assistance from Diversity Council.

2)    Work with library administration to review possible changes to improve access and information about library facilities for under-represented groups, including lactation room, meditation space, testing space for students with disabilities, and gender-neutral restrooms.

Timeline:  Ongoing.         

Responsible party:  Library Administration with input from Diversity Council and University Library Faculty Organization.

3)    Develop program of in-service trainings that encompass diversity concerns for hourly student staff to augment team trainings.

Timeline:  By September 15, 2017.--Complete     

Responsible party:  Library Administration with input from Diversity Council and University Library Supervisors Group.

4)    Develop process for identifying unique titles to enhance prominent areas of library collections: information about world cultures and religions for the University Library “Pop Shop” popular reading area, and “simple English” versions of popular texts for the juvenile collection to meet the needs of students learning English as a second language.

Timeline:  By May 2018.  

Responsible party:  University Library Campus Outreach Group, with support from University Library International Students Working group, and Diversity Council.

5)    Plan and implement “Windows to IUPUI’s Past, Present & Future”, a visual and informational installation planned for the connector between library and the Business/SPEA corridor, which will juxtapose images and exhibits (both physical and digital) depicting IUPUI’s heritage and current research/scholarly activities. This project is supported by a grant from the Chancellor’s Welcoming Campus Innovation Fund.

Timeline:  By September 15, 2017.          

Responsible party:  University Library Welcoming Campus Project Group with support from Library Administration.

IUPUI Campus Goal -- Access and Success

Campus objectives:

  • Support student success through developing a diverse faculty and staff community, as well as enrollment shaping initiatives.

 

University Library actions:

1)    Promote the campus Staff Mentoring Program. Explore a library specific mentoring program for staff modeled on UL librarian mentoring program.

Timeline:  By May 1, 2018.          

Responsible party:  Library Administration with input from Diversity Council.

2)    Formalize UL commitment to hiring students with unmet financial need through promotion of work study and elimination of obstacles to hiring work study students (host appropriate training/info session(s) for supervisors, including work study ins and outs, and mentoring students).

 Timeline:  By September 15, 2017.         

Responsible party:  Library Administration with input from Diversity Council and University Library Supervisors Group.

3)    Continue to develop and grow the University Library Diversity Scholars undergraduate program by working with External Relations to ensure continued external support and identify new experiential learning/mentorship opportunities across library departments.

Timeline:  By September 15, 2017.          

Responsible party:  Library Administration with input from Diversity Council and supervising librarians and University Library External Relations Team. I

4)    Implement Curriculum Enhancement Grant from Center for Teaching and Learning to train student “peer” teachers in information literacy instruction.

Timeline:  By September 2018.    

Responsible party:  Librarian liaisons led by Education Librarian, Sara Lowe.

5)    Deploy a scheduling system that will allow for fair and efficient booking of group study rooms and the scheduling of librarians for consultations.

Timeline:  Starting in September 2017, project completed by September 2018.  

Responsible party:  Library Administration with librarians, Operations Team and Client Support Team.

6)    Continue to support the assessment efforts and programs (such as librarian liaison and student workshops) of the University Library International Students Working Group in order to improve library services and support for IUPUI international students.

Timeline:  Ongoing.         

Responsible party:  International Students Working group, Library Administration and Diversity Council.
