Sylvia Burlock Diversity Scholar 2012-2013

Diversity Scholar 2012 and 2013

As the 2012-2013 Diversity Scholar, Sylvia Burlock hosted the Diversity Film Festival, which is a film series that highlights cultural heritage months like Latino Heritage Month, Black History Month, Women’s History Month, and Asian-American/Pacific Islander Month.

The films that Burlock screened were La Misma Luna (Under the Same Moon), Glory, The Help, and Ip Man. Burlock created the promotional blog IUPUI Diversity Hotspot ( to advertise the films and other diversity events on campus, as well as to highlight IUPUI cultural clubs and organizations like the Asian Student Union, the International Club, the Latino Student Association, the Korean Student Union, and the Black Student Union. Burlock also used the Hotspot to feature interviews that she conducted with IUPUI staff at the Multicultural Success Center. She launched Music Videos Around the World: Asia, an online event in honor of Asian-American/Pacific Islander Month that showcases music videos with Asian-American and Asian artists as well as biographical information, on the Hotspot in April 2013.

In addition, Burlock worked with the Go Abroad Club to sponsor the International Speed Networking Event, which is an informal meet and greet between students who have studied abroad and those aspiring to study abroad.

Burlock will graduate in May 2014 with a Bachelors in English. She is experienced in blogging, public relations marketing, and graphic design, and has enjoyed the opportunity to gain such experiences as the Diversity Scholar for the IUPUI University Library.
