The second annual contest for high school students on topics of German immigration will be held by the Society for German-American Studies (SGAS).
Papers or projects are due January 18, 2000. First place winners will receive $200, second place winners $100, and third place winners $50. For their project or paper, participants are invited to explore details on the immigration of Americans from German speaking areas of Europe in their home town or area and focus on one individual or one group of significance.
Teachers can begin by celebrating German-American Heritage Month (September 15 to October 15) in general, and the anniversary of the 1683 immigration of Mennonites from Krefeld to Philadelphia on October 6 in particular.
Between October 20 and December 2, the contest organizers offer participants a chance to consult with experts from SGAS on their plans for their paper or project to make sure that they are on the right track. After the consultation participants are to complete their project independently.
