Endnote at IUPUI

What is Endnote?

Use the software to:

  • create lists of citations
  • format citations in pre-established or custom-designed citation styles
  • 'Cite While You Write' and automatically enter citations from your database into your papers in the desired citation style

What is Endnote Web?

EndNote Web is a web-based tool for managing and citing references and formatting bibliographies. All institutions which have site licenses for EndNote or Web of Knowledge automatically have access to EndNote Web. To set up an EndNote Web account go to myendnoteweb.com

EndNote Web has the following features:

  • Can store up to 10,000 references (the desktop version has an unlimited capacity).
  • References collected in the EndNote Web product can be transferred to your desktop version of EndNote and vice versa.
  • Note that while you can transfer records between EndNote Web and the desktop version of EndNote, they are still separate databases (there is no automatic synchronization between EndNote X and EndNote Web).
  • EndNote Web is accessible wherever you have access to the internet.
  • Like the desktop version, EndNote Web has a 'Cite While You Write' feature available through Word; however, you do need to download a plug-in to take advantage of this feature. See: EndNote Web Technical Support and Services.
  • EndNote Web is not as sophisticated as the desktop version. You can manipulate references more precisely with the desktop version.
  • You can share reference libraries with colleagues who also have EndNote Web access.
  • Consult Thomson's EndNote Web/EndNote Comparison Chart to further investigate the differences between the two products.
