Labor Studies : Finding Articles

General tips

If the library carries a particular journal, there will be a record in the library catalog for the journal title and the holdings information listing the specific volumes of the journal that are available in the library. However, the catalog will not describe the articles in these journals.

Information about journal articles and news articles can be found in indexes. Although some indexes are still available in print, most of the indexes are available as electronic databases. Some of these databases provide citation information so that the article can be located. Other databases include abstracts along with the citations. In some cases, full text databases are available, which provide the full text of the articles along with the citation information.

If the full text of an article is not available in the database where the citation is found, it may be available in another library database or in one of the library's electronic journals. In this case, the article can usually be accessed by clicking on the button.

If the article is not available electronically, it may be available in print or in microform in the University Library collection.

Articles that are not available in University Library can be ordered through Interlibrary Loan (ILLiad).

In order to effectively search an electronic database, it can be very helpful to refer to the HELP or SEARCH TIPS to learn the rules for searching in that database.

For example:

  • In EbscoHost's Academic Search Premier, try clicking on Database Help.
  • On the LexisNexis Academic Search Forms page for Guided News Search, try clicking on Tips for help.

If you have any questions, please ask a reference librarian in person, by phone, by e-mail, or by chat. Please see Research Help at University Library for information on reference services.
