EXHIBIT LIVING TO SERVE: A HISTORY OF THE NATIONAL FFA ORGANIZATION, 1928-2006
In 1928 a group of young men representing 33 states gathered in Kansas City, Missouri at the National Congress of Vocational Agricultural Students to discuss the possibility of creating a national organization for farm boys. This meeting resulted in the creation of the Future Farmers of America, now called the National FFA Organization. The purpose of the FFA was to educate agriculture students for lifelong careers by teaching scientific farming methods, community service, and leadership skills through hands-on experience. “Learning by doing” became such an important aspect of the FFA member’s education that it was captured permanently in the FFA Motto:
Learning to Do;
Doing to Earn;
Earning to Live;
Living to Serve.
This exhibit will be on display in the Ruth Lilly Special Collections and Archives, located in Room 0133 of the IUPUI University Library, 755 West Michigan Street, Indianapolis, Indiana.
