December 4, 1985.
On this day, Indiana's first trauma center designed specifically for children opened at the James Whitcomb Riley Hospital for Children on the Indiana University Medical Center campus. According to Professor Dennis W. Vane, professor of pediatric surgery in the Department of Pediatrics in the IU School of Medicine, the center was believed to be the first center to follow all recommended guidelines for treating trauma in children in the nation. "As far as we know now, there is no other comparable facility in the country," said Vane. The center would allow Riley staff to treat effectively double or triple the number of injured children.
