On This Day in IUPUI History: May 6, 1988

May 6, 1988.

On this day, the Hideaway, the cafe in the basement of the Blake Street Library, closed. The eatery, which served burgers, snacks, coffee, soda pop, and other goodies to hungry scholars, was for several years one of the few places on the IUPUI campus for students to fuel and/or caffeine up for classes or a serious cram session in the library. As well, the basement space was a regular venue for a variety of cultural events.

The reason for the Hideaway's demise was that library staff needed space to install microfilm readers and extra printers.

Peckish students resorted to the food court on the first floor of the hotel on the north side of Michigan Street.
