ABSTRACT

Norbert Krapf is a professor of English and the director of the C. W. Post Poetry Center at the C. W. Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville, New York. Krapf has written or edited seventeen books, including eleven books of poetry, a young adult novel, and a book of writings about William Cullen Bryant. Krapf was born in Jasper, Indiana, and much of his poetry and other writings are inspired by his native state and his German ancestry. His interest in the history of his family and of the German community in the area around Jasper started him on a research project that culminated in the publication of Finding the Grain: Pioneer German Journals and Letters from Dubois County, Indiana.

This collection contains research and publication materials for Finding the Grain. The book contains letters and journals written by Germans who settled in Dubois County from the 1830s to the1850s. These documents provide a first-hand look at the lives of the immigrants in their new environment. The research materials in the collection include photocopies, transcriptions, and translations of the original documents, Krapf's research notes on the documents, his correspondence with archivists, scholars, and translators about the documents, and photographs of some of the documents. The publication materials include drafts of the book's chapters, several versions of the final manuscript, correspondence, and permission to publish letters.
