In 1854, a group of German immigrant men organized an all male chorus in Indianapolis; by 1855, the group was performing concerts within the community. There are different accounts about who were the original founders, but the official 50th anniversary book listed six founders: Fredrich Rush, George Bauer, Nicholaus Jose, Eduard Longerich, Gottfried Recker, and Wenzel Schindler.
The members finally adopted bylaws and chose the name of Maennerchor (men's choir) in 1862. This singing group has become the oldest musical society in Indianapolis, and the oldest continuously active singing organization in the nation.
Starting in 1872, the Turnhalle (gymnasium) of the Sociale Turnverein (now known as the Athenaeum Turners) was the rehearsal hall and office for the group; the Maennerchor held concerts in the city, mainly Washington Halle. In December 1874, the Maennerchor moved operations to Union Hall and stayed there for three years.
In 1878, the Maennerchor rented the old City Hall on East Washington Street and occupied this building from 1878 until 1907. The Sociale Turnverein offered the Maennerchor a place in the new Das Deutsche Haus (The German House) when it was built in the 1890s. The parties could not agree upon facilities and arrangements, so negotiations ceased.
Because the Maennerchor wanted a building of its own, the members formed the Maennerchor Hall Stock Company to raise the funds needed to start construction. By the summer of 1906, the cornerstone was laid; by 1907, the Hall was opened and the Maennerchor moved into the building at the corner of Illinois and Michigan Streets. Designed by Swiss-born architect Adolph Scherrer in the German Renaissance Style, the building was large enough to contain all facilities necessary for a social and cultural club.
A financial crisis struck the Maennerchor in 1933 with the death of its principal benefactor, John P. Frenzel. Frenzel had paid many of the organization's bills over the years, and the Maennerchor had expectations of receiving a substantial bequest at his death. When the bequest was not forthcoming, the Maennerchor was unable to maintain its building. When the Maennerchor lost ownership of the building, the organization became associated with the Athenaeum Turners. They moved operations into the Athenaeum building (formerly Das Deutsche Haus) which allowed the group to continue performing. The first Maennerchor concert in the Athenaeum was in 1936. The Maennerchor's affiliation with the Athenaeum lasted until 1973.
After the Maennerchor left, the Maennerchor building served as the local Serviceman's Center during World War II, a nightclub for some time, and as Indiana University at Indianapolis Law School. The law school moved out of the building in 1970. American States Insurance Company then bought the building which was torn down because of the extent of its disrepair.
Throughout the years, the Maennerchor has participated in a number of events and group concerts. The only long lasting of these cooperative concert groups was the Triad, a combination of the Maennerchor, the Knights of Columbus, and the Murat Shriners, formed in 1943. For many years, the Maennerchor also sponsored guest artists, such as Eugene Conley, Phyllis Curtin, and Thomas Hayward, to perform with the choir. The guest artist series started in 1906 and continued through the 1970s.
The Indianapolis Maennerchor has played a significant role in the cultural development of the city and continues to perform, although it is no longer as large or as active as it was at the turn of the century.
The collection consists of a combination of two sets of records: the main set of the organization's records, acquired in 1991, and Kenneth Duncan's papers, acquired in 1990. Duncan collected these papers while a member of and historian for the Maennerchor. The collections were combined because of the similarity of information presented and the duplication of material. The collection has been organized into the following series: Administrative, Publicity, Financial, Photographs, Women's Auxiliary, and History.
The largest part of the collection consists of the publicity and programs for concerts put on by the Maennerchor. The programs date from 1866 to 1990. They include Maennerchor concerts, Triad concerts, as well as concerts in which the Maennerchor had no participation. Publicity also includes flyers for events, invitations to Turner events, and Festival programs (1883-1980s).
The administrative series includes minutes for committee meetings (1940-1980), agenda for meetings (1960-1975), constitutions and bylaws (1870s, 1960s), reports by committees (1960-1975), legal agreements (1970s), correspondence (1900-1990), and lists of members (1940s-1990s). The administrative series contains little material prior to 1940.
The history series includes essays written by Kenneth Duncan as historian of the Maennerchor and newspaper clippings on the Maennerchor from local papers (1940s-1990s). These clippings include concert announcements, reviews of shows, changes in Maennerchor composition, biographies of Maennerchor members and guest artists, and histories of the Maennerchor.
The photographs series includes assembly pictures (1940s-1970s), guest artists (1945-1969), and Maennerchor social events (1940s, 1981).
Financial receipts and bank statements will be found in the financial series (1904, 1906, 1940-1990).
The Women's Auxiliary series includes a list of members and dues paid (1948-1949), programs for a Ladies Society concert, and part of the constitution on auxiliaries (1900-1901).
