John J. Schwartz (1919- ), fund raising executive and author, was born in New Rochelle, N.Y. and attended Mercersberg Academy. Shortly after Schwartz married Katherine Sprackling in 1942, he served as a bomber airplane navigator during WWII in the Pacific, earning the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster. In 1945, he returned to civilian life and began his career in philanthropy. Schwartz worked for the following companies from 1946-1966:
Schwartz was employed by the American Association of Fund Raising Counsel, Inc. (AAFRC), in 1966 and remained with the AAFRC for 21 years. He served as Executive Director from 1966-1968, as Executive Vice President from 1968-1972, and as President from 1973-1987. Schwartz also was President of AAFRC's Trust for Philanthropy from 1985-1987.
Schwartz utilized his AAFRC position to represent the fundraising profession on the national level, to assist in the development of standards and ethics for fund-raising professionals, and to influence and monitor state and national charitable contribution legislation. Schwartz was a founding member of the Coalition for Voluntary Organizations (CONVO). CONVO later merged with the National Council on Philanthropy to form Independent Sector. Schwartz was instrumental in the merger and became a founding board member of Independent Sector. He was also the founding president of Independent Sector's National Center for Charitable Statistics. Schwartz served on the boards of the National Charities Information Bureau, the governing board of the World Fundraising Council and the AARP Andrus Foundation.
Schwartz has remained active since his retirement from AAFRC on November 12, 1987. He was the Chairperson of National Philanthropy Day in 1988 and serves as a consultant to the Indiana University Center on Philanthropy. He wrote Modern American Philanthropy: A Personal Account, which chronicled his philanthropy career. Schwartz continues to maintain a consulting interest in several international philanthropic endeavors and is working on a second book.
The collection consists of the business papers (1948-1994) of John J. Schwartz. The collection has been divided into seven series: 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, publications, speech notes and AAFRC.
The majority of the papers are concerned with Schwartz's career during the 1980s and 1990s. These papers are generally related to Schwartz's work while he was president of the AAFRC and as a consultant for the Indiana University Center for Philanthropy. The collection does not contain information concerning Schwartz's personal life nor information prior to 1948 other than photocopies of the birth certificates of both Schwartz and his wife.
Papers from the 1950s and 1960s contain fund-raising reports prepared for organizations which had contractual agreements with Schwartz's employers. These papers also contain correspondence and Schwartz's early career resumes.
The 1970s series contains a considerable number of papers devoted to Schwartz's work with the Coalition of National Voluntary Organizations (CONVO). The papers consist of lists of the board of directors, by-laws, sponsors, meeting minutes and correspondence.
The 1980s and 1990s series contain papers concerning Schwartz's work as president of AAFRC and as a board member of several philanthropic organizations. Several folders contain materials Schwartz collected during the writing of his book, Modern American Philanthropy: A Personal Account. These papers also contain correspondence and miscellaneous materials from projects Schwartz was involved with after his retirement in 1987.
The AAFRC series contains papers from 1966-1990. The papers consists of AAFRC publications, Schwartz's 1966 job appointment and employment agreement, clippings and correspondence. The series also contains the 1986 by-laws of the AAFRC and a list of principal officers and member firms of the organization.
The speech notes series consists of 3 x 5 cards on which Schwartz had written his speech notes in outline form as well as the date, place and organization for which the speech was given. The note cards are for speeches given between 1959-1975.
