Indianapolis Maennerchor 33rd Anniversary Celebration invitation, 1887

One area of conflict between German immigrants and other citizens in Indianapolis was over the observance of the Sabbath. Members of Calvinistic and Wesleyan churches viewed Sunday as a day to be set aside for worship and quiet activities, but for German-Americans it was a day for recreation and enjoyment. While German-American organizations did move some of their activities to weekdays, they still used Sunday for many occasions. The Maennerchor, for example, scheduled the grand celebration of their 33rd anniversary on a Sunday.
