About Gmelin

Gmelin (1772+) is a database of organometallic and inorganic structures, such as coordinations compounds, alloys, catalysts, glasses and ceramics, and minerals. It includes chemical and physical properties and relevant references to the original handbook and the journal literature. Hundreds of chemical and physical data fields can be searched, including electric, magnetic, thermal, crystal, and physiological data.

How To Access Gmelintab

People currently affiliated with IUPUI or Indiana University may use Gmelin via Reaxys (online version) or Crossfire Commander (client software).  Note: CrossFire software wil be retired December 31,2010

On University Library computers, look for "MDL Crossfire Commander" in the Start menu, under All Programs".  CrossFire Commander also may be used off campus via IUPUI VPN software. In order to use Gmelin via CrossFire Commander on lab, office or home computers, you must install client software.

For basic help using Gmelin, contact IUPUI Chemistry liaison Eric Snajdr (278-2778). For advanced help using Crossfire Commander, contact IUB Chemistry Librarian Roger Beckman (812-855-9792)

Gmelin In Detailtab

Learning how to search the Gmelin database is challenging but worthwhile because the database provides excellent coverage of property information for organometallic and inorganic compounds. User friendly query forms, once located, can make fact searching much easlier. You can search by drawing a structure, by entering the composition or by entering a percentage of the composition. You can also build sophisticated queries that incorporate structure, substructure, reaction, property, and keyword searches.
