This resource guide encompasses many areas of the Earth Sciences. Other subject guides that may be useful to consult include: Chemistry, Computer Science, Environment , Geography, Government Information, Biology, Mathematics, Physics, and Public Affairs. The aim of this guide is threefold: - To outline the traditional research pathway beginning with dictionaries, encyclopedias, yearbooks, handbooks, etc.
- To develop a familiarity and vocabulary of definitions, concepts and reference sources.
- To serve as a resource for reference desk staff in leading users to appropriate library services, resources, and collections.
A final note, library guides provide a passive approach to reference services for undergraduate research inquiries. Consult the reference desk staff as appropriate.

Government Information
The federal government is a major publisher of geology reports and publications. Below are resources produced by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Most of these resources are indexed in GeoRef [CSA-Web]. USGS publications can be shelved either in the Library's General Collection (Stacks), for older materials, or the Library's Government Documents collection, for newer materials. Many publications are also electronically accessible, and the online catalog will often reflect this. Be sure to contact the Geology liaison, Ed Gonzalez, if you need assistance in locating materials. Please note: this is not an exhaustive listing of USGS publications available at University Library. United States Geological Survey Yearbook (replaced by the Annual Financial Report in the late 1990's) Earlier years in stacks by call number: STACKS QE76 .U55 1980 to present - available either via microfiche or paper: GOVERNMENT DOCUMENTS I 19.1/2: In general, perform a Title search on 'Geological Survey Yearbook' in IUCAT for a listing of holdings Selected online access at: http://pubs.usgs.gov/products/books/yrbooks.html U.S. Geological Survey General Publications Available in varying formats, microfiche or paper, early 1980's to the present: GOVERNMENT DOCUMENTS I 19.2: Check IUCAT for a specific title or series name.
