Museum Studies: Library Research TipsMuseum Studies is MULTIDISCIPLINARY. There isn’t one place to look!
There are museums on just about every topic you can think of, so you might consider resources relating to natural history, biology, history, archaeology, anthropology, material culture, art, motor sports...the list goes on and on... There are historic buildings and sites, living history interpretive sites, landscapes and zoos... Museum work can involve research into conservation, preservation, marketing, administration, exhibitions, visitor studies, volunteerism, nonprofit studies, education.... You will explore various subject databases to find articles for your museum studies topic. You will become creative when thinking about the search terms you use and how you combine your terms. Some examples: specific objects/artifacts for researching items for cataloging or exhibition (e.g. stagecoach; basketry; photography); material culture; cultural heritage; cultural property, repatriation, NAGPRA, cultural sensitivity, ownership, ethics, education. Art Full Text is a bibliographic database that indexes and abstracts articles from periodicals published throughout the world. Full-text coverage for selected periodicals is also included. Periodical coverage includes English-language periodicals, yearbooks, and museum bulletins, as well as periodicals published in French, Italian, German, Japanese, Spanish, Dutch, and Swedish. In addition to articles, Art Full Text indexes reproductions of works of art that appear in indexed periodicals. Indexing coverage begins 1984; abstracting coverage begins with January 1994. The abstracts range from 50 to 300 words and describe the content and scope of the source articles. Full-text coverage begins in 1997.

Formerly the American Humanities Index, this database contains bibliographic records from a multitude of U.S. and international journals, books and reference works. Humanities International Index provides citations and abstracts for articles, essays and reviews, as well as original creative works including poems, fiction, photographs, paintings and illustrations.
