Finding Articles

You can search many article databases simultaneously in MetaSearch, or each database individually by clicking on the links below. Note: MetaSearch may not always be appropriate for graduate/faculty level research since it lacks the ability to fine-tune searches or set up alerts.

See this handout for tips on distinguishing between popular magazines, industry/trade publications, and peer-reviewed journals.

Want to save some time by brainstorming search terms before diving into the article databases? You may find a concept table very helpful (here's a sample of how it works).

  • Physical Education Index covers physical education curricula, sports medicine, dance, sport law, kinesiology, motor learning, recreation, standardized fitness tests, sports equipment, business and marketing, coaching and training, sport sociology/psychology, health education, and physical therapy. See a complete list of publications included in PE Index.
  • SPORTDiscus w/ Full Text offers comprehensive, bibliographic and full text coverage of sport, fitness and related disciplines. Contains over 230 full text titles. In addition, SPORTDiscus with Full Text also contains over 650,000 records with journal and monograph coverage going back to 1800; over 20,000 dissertations and theses and reference to articles in 60 different languages. See a complete list of publications included in SPORTDiscus.
  • MEDLINE (EBSCO version) provides authoritative medical research information from such fields as medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care system, pre-clinical sciences, and much more with MEDLINE®.
  • MEDLINE (via Ovid) is the National Library of Medicine's premier source for bibliographic and abstract coverage of biomedical literature from more than 4,600 biomedical journals published in the United States and 70 other countries. You can also search a slightly less complete and less complex version of MEDLINE via EBSCOhost.
  • Anatomy.tv gives detailed views of human anatomy at various anatomical levels, from bone to surface structure and every layer in between. Models may be rotated to view from all perspectives, and descriptive text is provided for each part displayed.

You may need to use other article databases for your research in Exercise Science/Fitness Studies.
