Library and Information Science: Finding Books
Searching IUCAT for Books
Check the IUCAT
screen for general suggestions on searching the catalog.
Keep in mind that records in the IU catalog use Library of Congress subject headings. It may be helpful to look at the subject headings in the Library of Congress subject heading guide found at the University Library. The Reference Department has a copy of the “Red Books” containing the Library of Congress Subject Headings.
If a book is available at one of the other IU campuses, but not in Indianapolis, you can use Request Delivery to request that it be delivered to University Library or to another IU library of your choice.
Please see Request Delivery for more details about this service.

In WorldCat, check the help
screen for general suggestions on searching the catalog.
For suggestions on subject headings, or just to search by subject, try the subject search help
, which can be reached from the Advanced Search screen. This will help to find approved subject headings as well as broader and narrower subject headings as shown in the example below:
| Subject Heading: | International librarianship | |
| Used for: | Librarianship, International | |
| Broader Subject Headings: | International cooperation [ Expand ] | |
| Related Subject Headings: | Comparative librarianship Library cooperation | |
| Narrower Subject Headings: | Bibliography, International [ Expand ] |
Clicking on a subject heading will link to records in the catalog for books and other items with that subject heading. Clicking on Expand will show options for broader and narrower subject headings.
If you need a book that is not available at any of the IU libraries, you can use Interlibrary Loan to ask for a book to be loaned to University Library for your use.
Please see the Interlibrary Services page for more information on this service and to set up your account.
