Stephen E. Towne is Associate University Archivist in the IUPUI Special Collections and Archives. He works to collect and preserve IUPUI university records of administrative, legal, and historical value.
Mr. Towne is also an historian of the American Civil War (1861-1865), specializing in politics in Indiana and surrounding Midwestern states in the North during the rebellion. He is the author of several articles published in scholarly journals, and editor of A Fierce, Wild Joy: The Civil War Letters of Colonel Edward J. Wood, 48th Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment (University of Tennessee Press, 2007), and co-editor with Richard F. Nation of Indiana's War: The Civil War in Documents (Ohio University Press, 2009). He is currently working on a book on the development of the federal government's political and military intelligence in the North during the Civil War.
