Angela McBride served as the fourth dean of the Indiana University School of Nursing from 1991 to 2003. Her efforts expanded teaching initiatives, technology, and community nursing at IUPUI. With McBride's help, all 8 campuses of IU School of Nursing became accredited, a PhD program was added, web-based education was developed, and external funding was increased by millions of dollars.

McBride came to IUPUI in 1978 to develop a doctoral program in psychiatric nursing and in 1980, she became department chair. From 1985 to 1990 McBride served as the School of Nursing's first Associate Dean for Research. She has also served as Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs - Nursing within the Clarian Health system and currently sits on their board of directors. McBride is well-known for her nursing research and has received numerous awards for both her commitment to nursing and to education. In 1992, she became the first IUPUI woman to receive the title of Distinguished Professor, and in 1995, she became the first Indiana woman elected to the Institute of Medicine. She retired from IUPUI in 2005. In 2006, she was recognized as a "Living Legend" by the American Academy of Nursing.
