Introduction

Umbrella is an art journal that began publication by Judith Hoffberg in 1978. The journal covers news and reviews of artist books, mail art and contemporary art and photography tradebooks. It includes interviews with leading book artists, alternative spaces as well as Fluxus artists. The journal ended print-copy publication in 2005 and moved to an online edition, 2006-2008. Soon after ceasing hard-copy publication in 2005, permission was granted to the Herron Art Library of IUPUI University Library to digitize the 1978-2005 journal run and provide access over the World Wide Web. Permission was later extended to cover the electronic format as well. This collection contains the full journal run, print and electronic, 1978-2008. This is an important collection for the study of the genre. Online access has proved to be of great value to researchers. It is a great honor for the Herron Library to serve as a gateway to this resource and continue Judith's vision to provide access to the wealth of information provided across the collection. The library staff is in the process of moving this material to Public Knowledge Project's Open Journal System so that the journal will continue Judith's vision in an open-access environment. This collection is dedicated to the memory and important work of Judith Hoffberg.

How to Use This Collection

Searching: To perform a keyword search using the yellow navigation bar at the top of the screen, enter search terms in the "Keyword Search" box. This box is an automatic "and" search, meaning results obtained will contain all of the words entered in the search box. Do not enter the Boolean operators "and", "or", or "not" because they are not supported here and will hinder search results.

Browsing: You may also simply "open" an issue and begin to read. To do so, choose "Browse This Collection" and click on the thumbnail or the title of an issue from the list.

Viewing: To the left of the image is the navigation pane. This pane shows you a list of pages within the issue. The "Search this object" box enables you to search within that particular issue. Below the search box is the "View" menu. By selecting a drop-down menu option and hitting "go", the display in the image window will change. "Document description" view will display information about the issue you are viewing, including title and subjects. "Page description" view shows the information that is specific to that page only. The "Page & text" shows the image and the searchable text side by side. The "Print version" displays a printer friendly PDF of the issue. In order to return to an image from either the document or page view, just click on a page title in the navigation pane.
