Noise Policy

The IUPUI University Library is committed to providing an environment that is conducive to study as well as welcoming to all users. All library staff and users of the library should respect the rights of others and refrain from making excessive noise while using the University Library.

Quiet Area

The Third Level has been designated as the quiet floor (marked with signage). In this area normal conversational noise levels are permitted for reference and library service purposes only. Headphones may be used if noise from headphones is not audible to others. Laptop computers may be operated, but all sound or audio features must be turned off. Cell phones and pagers should be turned to silent (not vibrate) or off.

Cell Phones

University Library requires all individuals to set their cell phones to no-ring mode (silent or off in the designated quiet areas) upon entering the library building. If you must use your cell phone to make or receive a phone call while in the library, go to one of the following designated cell phone friendly areas:

  • Lower Level Lobby
  • First Level Lobby
  • Second Level Entrance

Quiet cell phone use is also permitted on the Fourth Level in the area behind the elevators and in the Second Level Academic Commons/Reference Room.

Wherever you use your phone please be considerate of those around you and keep your voice to a reasonable level so as not to disturb other library patrons. At the discretion of library staff, patrons may be asked to take their cell phone conversations to one of the designated cell phone friendly areas.

Cooperation

All University Library users are expected to abide by these policies and will be asked to comply if necessary. All library employees are empowered with the responsibility to approach disruptive groups and individuals and ask them to discontinue the disruptive behavior. Users who become belligerent or refuse to discontinue disruptive behavior will be asked to produce photo identification and, for IUPUI students, their student number. If a user does not have identification, or refuses to show identification, he or she will be asked to leave the library immediately. If a user refuses to leave the library when asked the police will be called. The Dean of Students will be notified of anyone whose student number has been taken more than once. Non students may begin losing library privileges following the second identification of non-compliance.
