3D Printing Studio

The University Library 3D Printing Studio equipment has been provided through a generous federal grant from the Library Technology Services Act.  The Studio includes two Makerbot 5th Generation Printers,  two Makerbot Replicator + Printers, one LulzBot 3D Printer, and one Makerbot 3D Scanner.  The studio is available to all students, faculty and staff of IU.

Lab hours are Monday – Thursday 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  

Pricing

3D printing at the University Library currently costs $0.20 per gram of plastic used to print the object. When your model has finished printing, you will be contacted by a 3D Print Specialist to arrange a time for you to see the item prior to paying for it.

When you’re ready to print, a charge form, which is different from the request form, will be submitted by you and a Multimedia Consultant with the object details along with your consent to print the object and agreement to accept the calculated charges.

Policies

University Library 3D printers and scanners are available to university faculty, staff and students to make three-dimensional objects in plastic using a design that is uploaded from a digital computer file.

University Library 3D printers and scanners may be used only for lawful purposes, so it is not permitted to use library 3D printers to create material which is:

• Prohibited by local, state or federal law.
• Unsafe, harmful, dangerous or considered by library staff to pose an immediate threat to the well-being of others.
• Considered by library staff to be obscene or otherwise inappropriate for the library environment.
• In violation of another’s intellectual property rights. For example, the printers will not be used to reproduce material that is subject to copyright, patent or trademark protection.

The University Library reserves the right to refuse any 3D print request.

Items printed on University Library 3D printers that are not picked up within 14 days will become property of the University Library. Items must be picked up by the requesting individual with picture ID. 3D printed items which are not picked up and paid for within the 14-day time period will be automatically charged to the requester’s IU/IUPUI Bursar Account.

Only designated Library staff and volunteers will have hands-on access to the 3D printer.
